Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric bypass surgery separates the stomach into two sections, leaving a small pouch at the top that serves as the new stomach. The small stomach can only accommodate a few ounces of food at a time, so the patient can no longer eat large amounts of food. Furthermore, a portion of the small intestines is now bypassed during digestion, reducing the amount of calories and nutrients the body can absorb.
Patients need to be aware that gastric bypass surgery is a major, life-changing operation and should not be viewed as a substitute or a “quick fix” for proper nutrition and exercise. The decision to undergo gastric bypass surgery should not be made lightly. Although gastric bypass surgery and post-bariatric body contouring can combine to produce some of the most dramatic results for our Tijuana and San Diego patients, the preparation leading up to gastric bypass surgery is intensive. Patients will be required to keep a food diary and cease consumption of caffeinated beverages, among other considerations. LAP-BAND® System
The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System is a less invasive approach to bariatric surgery. The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band is removable and the stomach is not permanently altered as in gastric bypass surgery. The surgeon simply places a constricting band around the top of the stomach, which shrinks the opening of the stomach and limits the amount of food that can be tolerated. The doctor can adjust the opening as needed after the surgery by injecting saline into the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band. After weight loss surgery, you may be an excellent candidate for an arm lift, body lift, or liposuction procedure.
